In The Midst Of A Crisis – An employment lawyer’s perspective

28Feb2020

In response to the spreading outbreak of COVID-19, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong hosted its first webinar with Tanner De Witt Employment Practice partner Russell Bennett as one of the guest speakers.

The event began with an update from Dutch Consul General Annemieke Ruigrok on travel precautions and the spread of the disease; the Netherlands itself registering its first confirmed case the previous day.

After the update from the Consul General, Russell spoke to the specific considerations for employers and employees in Hong Kong. As with his article, “Legal and Workplace Implications of Reported Cases of the Novel Coronavirus,” Russell highlighted the key issues such as unpaid leave, home working, the employer’s duty of care/precautions and the handling of personal data such as medical information.

James Ellender, Director Asia Pacific of Futurum was the final speaker, highlighting crisis management and preparedness.

Russell was delighted to have been invited to be a part of the Dutch Chamber’s first-ever webinar.
