Theme

The theme for the IPBA’s 25th Annual Meeting and Conference is Vision for the Future. In keeping with this theme, the conference will open with two plenary sessions addressing the future professional landscape against which IPBA members will practice.

Keynote Speaker

The keynote speech will be delivered by the Hon Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma, GBM. Chief Justice Ma was appointed Chief Justice of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal on 1 September 2010. Chief Justice Ma joined the Hong Kong Judiciary as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in 2001. He was appointed Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court in 2002, and Chief Judge of the High Court in 2003.

Plenary Sessions

The first plenary session – “Vision for the Future – the Playing Field” – will explore how the economic/business/political/regulatory environment will look beyond 2015. The panel will be made up of major leaders from the world of business and finance and will be moderated by Nick Edwards, Business Editor at the South China Morning Post. Continuing the sporting theme, the second plenary session – “Vision for the Future – the Legal Team” will grapple with the findings from the first session and offer insights into how the legal profession must respond and adapt in order to survive and prosper against this changing landscape. These insights will be provided by a panel of managing partners from international law firms and other professionals with relevant experience of the challenges facing the legal world. The discussion will be moderated by David Burgess, the Publishing Director of Legal 500.

Concurrent Committee Sessions

There will also be three days of concurrent committee sessions. These will be run by the IPBA’s 22 committees, which cover areas of law of interest to IPBA members. These sessions will provide the opportunity for lively and stimulating debate on subjects connected to the conference theme.
