The Flying Kukris held their annual Minis Rugby Festival at Community Sports in New Territories, playing host to youth rugby teams from around Hong Kong.

Tanner De Witt entered a team in the Run Up Two IFC Charity Race. The event was organised by The Community Chest, which allocated HK$6,200,000 to support eight member social welfare agencies providing Services for the Physically Disabled in 2006/07.
At 415 metres tall, Two IFC is the tallest building in Hong Kong. Teams of four runners ran in relays to the 88th floor.
Team Tanner De Witt completed the race in 22 minutes and raised $38,000.

Tanner De Witt is a patron of Hong Kong's Biggest Alphabet Book which was launched on 30 November at RED Bar & Restaurant in aid of the Child Development Centre at Matilda [International Hospital]. The Centre provides an early intervention programme for children with special needs from birth to six years of age, serving over 130 special needs children and their families throughout the year.

Kenneth Choy gave a presentation on intellectual property in Cantonese to the Hong Kong Chamber of Small and Medium Business. The title of the talk was "Methods of minimising infringement of Intellectual Property Rights".

Twister is the youth rugby team made up of players from the TDW Flying Kukris and other New Territories clubs including Tin Shui Wai Eagles and Taipo Dragons MRFC, plus the Macau RFC. It is sponsored by Tanner De Witt.
Twister U16s got off to a roaring start to the season on 1 October with a 38-5 drubbing of Taipo Whalers. The next week, the U14s opened by losing 39-5 against Valley Fort 2, but after falling behind 29-0, the U14s played much better in the second half.

Tanner De Witt's two sponsored rugby teams got together for a training session for the Minis and Colts/Girls. The Nomads also played a league match and hosted and sponsored a barbecue, generously donating $3000 to cover costs for the Flying Kukris. A good crowd stayed behind to watch and enjoy the food, beer and company well into the afternoon.

Tanner De Witt was pleased to be named as a finalist in three categories of the Asian Legal Business Hong Kong Law Awards held on 22 September at the Conrad Hotel. For the second year in succession the firm was a finalist for Hong Kong Law Firm of the Year. In addition this year it was a finalist for Employment Law Firm of the Year and Richard Tanner was named as a finalist for Managing Partner of the year.
Richard commented, “We are delighted that the hard work and dedication of our team has been recognised once again at these prestigious awards. Ian De Witt was one of the presenters on a CPD course entitled Mis-selling and Related Issues - Duties and Obligations of Independent Financial Advisors Explored.
Ian discussed civil liability of negligence and for giving negligent advice:
- Recap on the tort of negligence - some important principles
- Special duty of care owed by professionals and clients (eg solicitor’s negligence, advisor’s negligence)
- Standard of care required - Reasonableness test and factors to be considered
- Application in financial industry and the Barber Asia case
- Quantum of damages for negligent advice
- Court action for negligence and procedure involved

Tanner De Witt once again sponsored the “Third Inaugural International Invitational Fat Boys Tens” rugby tournament at Clark Air Base in Angeles City, the Philippines. As in previous years, the money raised will go towards the Bahay Bata Center for Street Children in Angeles City and the Philippines Rugby Union Development Fund. Last year's Fat Boys Tens raised HK$150,000 for the twin causes.

Tanner De Witt was the sponsor of a CPD seminar entitled Questioned Documents and the Lawyer. It was presented at the Foreign Correspondents' Club by Paul Westwood of Forensic Documents Services Pte Ltd.
The seminar covered topics relating to the role of the forensic document examiner in court, the scope of document examination and the practical aspects of recognising and preserving the evidential potential of documents.
Mr Westwood discussed methods of detecting “forged” signatures, handwriting identification, dating issues, sequencing entries in files and records, examination of medical records. The seminar also drew from actual casework to highlight good practices in the handling of documents to ensure their evidential value is not compromised.

Tanner De Witt sponsored a Lighthouse Club Golf Day at Kau Sai Chau Golf Course. Hugh Boyd of Maeda Corporation was the winner. He is pictured being awarded first prize of a rescue club by Nick Longley.
The Lighthouse Club is a non-political organisation that raises money, through social activities, to give financial help to the victims of accident and illness within the construction industry and to dependants after a fatal accident.

International Construction Conference and Exhibition
Tanner De Witt was a Gold Sponsor of the International Construction Conference and Exhibition, part of a celebration by the Lighthouse Club of 20 years in Asia. Nick Longley was one of the speakers at the conference, which took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The title of Nick's talk was Let's Be Reasonable: Quantum Meruit and Asian Equivalents.
The Lighthouse Club is a non-political organisation that raises money, through social activities, to assist less-fortunate persons associated with the construction industry.

We are pleased to welcome Liu Xuebing to the firm. Mr Liu is a qualified PRC lawyer with over 10 years' experience. After graduating from the University of Beijing and China University of Political Science and Law he practised commercial and corporate law in Guangzhou. He is taking part in the Lord Chancellor's Training Scheme for Young Chinese Lawyers, which each year gives 15 outstanding commercial lawyers from the PRC with three to five years post-qualification experience the opportunity of spending ten months in England and two months in Hong Kong.
While in England, Mr Liu had the opportunity to study English law and took a placement at Veale Wasbrough in Bristol. Mr Liu will spend two months with Tanner De Witt familiarising himself with Hong Kong law practice before returning to his law firm in Guangdong, The Whobound Law Firm. Tanner De Witt was a Silver Patron of the 2006 Hong Kong Tens Rugby Tournament. The Tens takes place on the Wednesday and Thursday before the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens weekend, continuing a tradition that has been in place since 1986.

Norman Hau and Vivian Au took part in a charity walk co-organised by the Young Solicitors' Group and Sowers Action, an educational development programme in China. The walk raised HK$550,000 for the purpose of rebuilding a primary school in Sichuan province.
